ABOUT OUR FARM

Stout Oak Farm is a Certified Organic, solar-powered vegetable farm in Brentwood, New Hampshire. We grow 5 acres of vegetables for our CSA, Farm Store, farmers’ markets and local restaurants.  As a production-oriented vegetable farm, we strive for quality and efficiency in all aspects of our work, with a focus on adopting “lean farming” practices. In addition to organic vegetables and microgreens, farm enterprises include seedling production for home vegetable gardeners, and a young fruit orchard.  With our CSA at the heart of our farm, we seek to cultivate connection and community through food and farming. We also love to collaborate with other farmers. Stout Oak Farm co-owns the local food distribution company Three River Farmers Alliance with a few of our farmer friends.

POSITION:  ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER

This is a management position that requires significant prior experience. Our hope is to find someone who would like to settle in at Stout Oak for multiple years.  If you are that person, we’d love to meet you!

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE BRINGS TO THE JOB:

  • Relevant experience in a leadership role, successfully training and managing a team.
  • Experience in organic vegetable production (at least 3 years working on a vegetable farm full-time)
  • Confidence working with a range of vegetable production tools – both hand-scale and tractor-scale
  • Experience in post-harvest handling of vegetable crops and relevant food safety considerations
  • Familiarity with record-keeping required for organic certification
  • Interest in adopting “lean farming” practices, and finding ways to increase efficiency
  • Familiarity with farm budgets; interest in understanding costs of production and profitability
  • Experience with direct sales including farmers’ markets, on-farm store, and CSA
  • Interest in marketing strategies and building relationships with customers
  • Experience writing content for newsletters and other online marketing
  • Comfortable with Excel, Google Docs, Square, Mailchimp, social media
  • Shares our commitment to organic farming and responsible land stewardship
  • Passion for growing food

Compensation based on experience. The Assistant Manager position is full-time beginning in March 2020.

POSITIONS:  ASSISTANT GROWERS (2)

Take your vegetable production skills to the next level, and play an integral role on our small, dynamic team!

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has at least one year of experience working on a vegetable farm.
  • Brings to the job specific experience in organic vegetable production, including greenhouse seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing and packing.
  • Additional experience in CSA coordination, on-farm retail, irrigation, tractor/small engine maintenance, carpentry, and other hands-on skills a plus.
  • Works well independently, and also in a group.
  • Is a fast worker and quick learner. Thrives in a fast-paced, high-energy work environment.
  • Loves working outdoors and embraces the challenges of a physically demanding job.
  • Brings a positive attitude and ability to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Is both reliable and adaptable, with a strong worth ethic.
  • Comes to us highly motivated to hone their skills in organic vegetable production.
  • Shares our commitment to organic farming and responsible land stewardship.

Assistant Growers are involved in many aspects of the farm, working directly with the farm’s managers on a daily basis. Most of the work entails transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing, and distributing farm produce. The job also includes greenhouse seeding and watering, plus general farm maintenance and upkeep. Training is provided in the early part of the season so that Assistant Growers learn our farm’s systems and practice specific technical skills needed to become highly productive members of the team.

Compensation based on experience. The Assistant Grower position is a seasonal, full-time position from March or April through November. Some winter hours may be available.

POSITION:  CSA COORDINATOR / RETAIL ASSISTANT

This is a new position in 2020. We are looking for someone who is great at customer service and loves local vegetables! Join our team and gain experience marketing local food through our CSA, on-farm store, and farmers’ markets!

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has a passion for local organic food and farming.
  • Is familiar with the CSA model, and has a strong interest in direct-marketing of farm products.
  • Has experience working in retail/customer service roles, preferably in a food-related or farm business.
  • Is an avid cook, knowledgeable about cooking with vegetables and other local foods.
  • Has experience writing content for newsletters and other online marketing.
  • Is comfortable with Excel, Google Docs, Square, Mailchimp, social media.
  • Is a fast worker and quick learner. Thrives in a fast-paced, high-energy work environment.
  • Works well independently, and also as part of a team.
  • Embraces the challenges of a physically demanding job, and enjoys working outdoors.
  • Is both reliable and adaptable, with a strong worth ethic and positive attitude.
  • Shares our commitment to organic farming and responsible land stewardship.

Responsibilities include:  Packing CSA shares and staffing CSA pickup twice weekly, CSA-related record-keeping, communicating with CSA and Farm Store customers in person and via email, Farm Store customer service, pricing, packing, and restocking of Farm Store products, and staffing a farmers’ market booth once a week. This person will also assist as needed with vegetable washing/packing, greenhouse work, harvesting, and other tasks. Depending on the person’s experience, this position may also include writing email newsletters and other online marketing. Training is provided in the early part of the season so that all of our staff can learn our farm’s systems, practice skills, and become highly productive members of the team.

Compensation based on experience. The CSA Coordinator/Retail Assistant position could either be a part-time or full-time position from April or May through November. Due to our CSA and market schedule, MUST be available to work on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during CSA pickup months (June through October).
