What is CSA?

Stout Oak Farm CSA members are the heart of our farm community. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) creates a direct connection between you and our farm.

CSA members make a commitment to the farm by purchasing a “share” of the harvest in advance of the growing season. This upfront commitment from you provides our farm with the capital we need early in the year – to buy seeds and supplies, and get our fields planted in the spring.  In return, members receive a  “share” of the farm’s harvest — fresh, in-season, high quality, organic vegetables grown and harvested right here on our farm.

You Won’t Have To Go It Alone

Enjoy the vegetables in your CSA Share with supports from your farmers.

For us, CSA is about community. Our CSA members are the individuals we picture in our minds when we’re planning our crops, seeding trays, worrying about wind and water, kneeling to harvest lettuce, pulling up sweet turnips, hoeing in all the weather. We love growing your food.

We also love this work and the food we grow. We grow the vegetables we do because these are the vegetables we love to fill our own plates with. We grow the varieties we do because we think they taste the best and these are the vegetables we love to eat. We know we feel our best when we eat tons of leafy greens and so we grow tons of leafy greens that are really really tasty, too.

We’re excited to share our veggie love and knowledge with our CSA Community.

One of the primary ways we do this is through our CSA email newsletter. This is the email our CSA members get every week – chock full of everything going on on the farm, what we’re eating, information on the vegetables in your share this week, how to store and cook them, photos, recipe links, and more. Here’s a sampling for you of two of our weekly CSA emails from 2021, Week 7, early July and Week 16, September. Please take a peek and read on for more about our CSA shares.

Weekly Vegetable CSA Shares

Sam showing a pea that has a little heartWeekly Vegetable Shares (or Veggie Shares) are the most popular type of share we offer. During the harvest season, each week’s share includes 8-10 fresh, organic, in-season vegetables grown right here on our farm.

At Stout Oak Farm, we are committed to taking good care of the land we farm, and providing delicious, healthy, safe, food for our community. CSA Members are at the very heart of our farm, and are a vital piece of how we connect with our community and follow through on that commitment.

Eat Well

Each week during the harvest season, Weekly Vegetable CSA shares contain 8 to 10 different vegetables, reflecting what’s in season on the farm. The shares are designed for one household, and typically feed 2 – 4 people.

Everything in your CSA is grown right here by us, freshly picked and packed for you. Our 18 week Veggie Share CSA season is the length of the peak harvest here in Brentwood, NH.

Eat With The Seasons

We grow over 40 different crops, including many heirloom varieties. CSA harvest begins in June, with plenty of greens and a few roots. Throughout the summer, we add in peas, more greens, more roots, onion family crops, and warm weather crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers. As the weather cools again in the fall, we include storage roots, cabbage, and onions.

Love Your Vegetables

Delicious and Healthy Being part of a CSA means you’ll get to try new veggies, (probably) eat more veggies than you are now, and find new favorites alongside enjoying many standards you already know and love.  We choose diverse crops that succeed on our human-scale organic farm in coastal New Hampshire.

Quality and Convenience Our CSA is known for its top quality, super fresh, very clean, organically grown vegetables. All of our crops are harvested, washed, bunched, and boxed by hand, specifically for your shares. Many CSA members tell us they enjoy the convenience and easy routine of having a great selection of vegetables pre-boxed and ready to pick up every week, with recipes and meal ideas.

Enjoy eating vegetables from your CSA share with coaching and inspiration from your farmers. We really love eating our own vegetables! And we’re excited to share all of our experience enjoying them.  Weekly Veggie Share Members get all the benefits we offer: weekly email newsletter from your farmers (this is the good stuff!) including recipes curated for your share and our own cooking advice and experience.

CSA Share from July 12 2021 includes kohlrabi, napa cabbage, kale, radishes, and eggplant

CSA Share from July 2021 includes cilantro, scallions, lettuce, radishes, daikon

Greens Box Shares

At Stout Oak Farm, we’re passionate about growing (and eating) top quality leafy greens of all kinds. You might say we’re obsessed. We’re always tasting the lettuce to make sure it’s sweet, tender, and tasty. We baby the baby Bok Choy (and so many other crops) with row cover blankets to protect their tender freshness and crunch from flea beetles and other pests. We’re getting better at growing chicories every year. Our salad conversations and variations know no bounds. Don’t get us started on mustards. And we’ve got #kalegoals.

Escarole, radicchio, bok choy, microgreens bok choy, kale, pea shoots, lettuce mix

A Greens Box CSA share is your weekly supply of fresh, nutritious, organic leafy greens. Each week, your Greens Box will include a selection of salad greens, micro greens, and cooking greens. You can sign up for a Greens Box on its own, or add it onto your Weekly Vegetable Share.

We have great variety of greens planned for 2022 including lettuce mixes, microgreens mixes, baby kale, lettuce, bok choi, tat soi, mustard greens, cabbage, radicchio, chicory, kale, Swiss chard, Napa cabbage, and other fresh tasty greens!

Greens Box shares start in Mid-May (the exact date depends on the weather) and run for 20 weeks, through the end of September. The cost is $400 for the 20-week season. Pick up your share at the farm on Tuesdays, 2:00 – 6:00pm OR Saturdays between 9:00 and 12:00 (pick up same day each week).

CSA Weekly Share Pickups

We have two CSA Pickups each week. When you sign up for your share, you will select Tuesday or Saturday as your pickup day. This will be your day for the whole season. Please note the time for pickup, too! For Tuesday it is 2-6pm and Saturday 9am-12pm. (For Farm Store Credit Members, it’s a little different – you can shop anytime the Farm Store is open!)

Please bring a tote bag or two with you and wear your mask. When you arrive, park in our lot and come into the Farm Store  (let us know if you’d like curbside, we’re happy to accommodate).

First stop, check off your name on our clipboard saying you’ve picked up your share. Next, get your vegetables. We’ll have a table set up with several shares on them. Weekly Vegetable Share members will each get the contents of a red colored tote. Greens Box members will each get the contents of one green colored tote. You’ll open the tote and transfer all the vegetables into your own bags. Members of our Farm Crew are on hand to answer your questions, give tips and advice, and ring up any additional purchases you’d like to make in our Farm Store.

Foodie Adventure BoxFoodie Adventure Box Shares

New in 2022! For adventurous eaters and cooks.

Join us for 10 weeks of delicious peak season abundance. Your Foodie Adventure Box will feature the foods your farmers are most excited about that week, including new varieties, veggies chefs love, and abundant crops ripe for preservation.

Come on an adventure with us as we seek the best flavors through exploring trial varieties, preserve the harvest with freezing and pickling, enjoy leveling up vegetable knowledge, and boldly eating different foods. You’ll get food projects (and the instructions!) to head into your weekend with–pickling and preserving, freezing, and batch prep. You’ll help us evaluate trial varieties – we’ll be asking for feedback and homework! And best of all, you’ll get to enjoy fun foods we’re trying out and growing just for you.

Foodie Adventure Boxes are $250 for 10 weeks. Pickup is Thursday afternoons, 2-6pm, late July through September.

A Very Different Kind of CSA

Our newest CSA Share will highlight trial varieties of many vegetables, abundance for preserving, and crops we want to get better at growing more of. If you anticipate each new season’s freshest foods, love trying out new recipes, want to stash away tomatoes and more to eat in winter, and find conversations about which variety of turnip is the sweetest and most buttery fascinating, we think you’ll love being a Foodie Adventurer.

Foodie Adventure Boxes are not a typical CSA share in that they don’t provide you with a wide variety of veggies each week. Some weeks might be only one or two foods–to make sauce, pesto, or kimchi, for example. If you are looking for a diversity of veggies in your share, please check out our Weekly Vegetable CSA shares, and our Greens Boxes for a variety of healthy leafy greens!

The amount of food in each week’s share will be enough for a reasonable “batch” or “project” or “sampling.” We’re hoping to hit the sweet spot between worth it and not overwhelming, including for very small households.

Eating seasonally, eating locally –  a delicious adventure.
